CUBA, October 26, 2016.- Cuba will present, today Wednesday, October 26, the resolution 70/5 entitled "Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba" at the United Nations General Assembly, for the twenty-fifth consecutive time.
As it was announced in the Report on the resolution, submitted on September 9, the economic damage that this policy has caused to the Cuban people in the period between April 2015 and June 2016, amounted to $753,668 billion USD considering the depreciation of the dollar against the value of gold in the international market. At the same time, the blockade continues hindering the economic and social development in Cuba.
During the meeting held by Cuban Deputy Minister of Foreign Relations Abelardo Moreno with national and foreign press in recent days, he said that the denounce to the extraterritorial nature of the blockade is also among the main aspects of the draft resolution. This measure, he said, not only affects Cuba; but also third countries and institutions, hindering the economic, commercial and financial relations among nations.
Likewise, the deputy minister stressed that the document welcomes the progress in the relations between Cuba and the United States, established from December 17, 2014. In addition, it also recognizes the repeated willingness by President Obama to work toward the elimination of the blockade, and measures taken are noted, and considered as positive, though they are limited.
The people of Cuba hopes that once more the international community will join the rejection of the US blockade and categorically condemn this inhumane policy that has violated the rights of Cubans for nearly six decades.
