Recalling that this year marks thirty-five years of diplomatic relations  he stated that Cuba was one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations and open an embassy in independent Zimbabwe.

He praised the political ties between the two countries and the good relations between the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro and Robert Mugabe, president of Zimbabwe as well as the cooperation and coincidence that has always existed on the major issues in the international arena.
