Subject: No More Blockade

To: The Ambassador of Cuba to Sierra Leone, Freetown.

Message:
In the first place Mr. Ambassador, we would like you to convey our congratulatory message to the Henry Reeve Cuban Medical Brigade, for its invaluable role in ending the deadly Ebola virus in West Africa. This message goes also to the entire Cuban medics for their timely intervention during the mud slide disaster in Freetown, August 2017 and the recent flooding that swept across the South African region. We are glad to intimate you that the name Che Guevara African Medical Brigade (CHEGAMB) had its origin from the Henry Reeve Cuban Medical Brigade, which was here in 2015 to help fight the spread of the deadly Ebola virus.

The Che Guevara African Medical Brigade was founded in 2015 and since then, it has been relentlessly working in defending the works of the Cuban medics in Africa and all over the world. And, we are continuing to involve in solidarity activities with Cuba.

Given the present tensions, arising from the US blockade, embargo, sanctions and other unjust, and unlawful actions and statements expressed by the US government, the role of the Hugo Chavez International Foundation for Peace, Friendship and Solidarity, through its Council of International Specialized High Commission, in extending solidarity to Cuba and the Cuban people has become more important than ever. Doing so would send a clear message that the plight of the Cuban people threatened by US blockade, will never be forgotten and that the world stands behind Cuba in defending human rights and dignity of the Cuban people.

In 1962 it will be 57 years since the US imposed the blockade against Cuba. That is 57 years of activity that nakedly robs off the Cuban people of their human rights; the health impacts and the economic devastation of this diabolic act have been overwhelming. The people of Cuba have been faced with human rights violations for all these decades due to the US government embargo and blockade, increased militarization of, illegal arrests, detentions and extrajudicial killings in the occupied Cuban Island of Guantanamo Bay. The Hugo Chavez International Foundation for Peace, Friendship and Solidarity has time and again call on the US government to end the human rights violations and also to end its military occupation in the Guantanamo Bay Island.

What we are witnessing at the Guantanamo Bay Island is the gross and persistent violations of some of the finest principles the international community had so painstakingly developed during the last 70 years. These relate to respect for international rule of law, protection of human rights and upholding of peace with justice. It is no secret that prisoners detained in Guantanamo Bay are foreign nationals and are inhumanely treated. The ill-treatment of these prisoners, in many situations, has angered the international public and has turned the people of the world against US politicians.

There have been also reports of the heinous impacts of the US blockade against Cuba. We have been informed also of the painful constraints being created by the blockade, making it extremely too difficult for the importation of essential items for peace and wellbeing of the Cuban people. This is not to talk of activities of US military personnel at the Guantanamo Bay Island, where foreign nationals are being treated in sub-human fashion on a daily basis. These policies constitute nothing but blatant violations of the human rights of a whole people and whole country.

It is also with deep concern that we have received reports of US government harassment, intimidation, blackmail and malicious attacks on Cuban health workers on foreign lands. We are disturbed that Cuban health workers have been subjected to cruel and inhumane treatment amounting to degradation and dehumanization; and that the world has been deprived of basic right to health. The Cuban doctors are committed to saving lives wherever their service is needed, anywhere on the planet.

The Che Guevara African Medical Brigade has a clear understanding of the working mechanism of the Henry Reeves Cuban Medical Brigade, which has been instrumental in kicking the Ebola virus out of West Africa, and in developing community-based health programmes across Africa. It is therefore more than unfortunate that these noble friends have become the target for harassment, intimidation and demonization by the Trump administration in Washington while they are involved in legitimate activities of humanitarian services as part of their noble profession.

Against this background that we call upon the US government to respect the human rights of the Cuban people, and end its harassment of Cuban doctors.

By maintaining the blockade against Cuba, the US government is packing pressure to bear on other foreign governments to cease all humanitarian assistance to vulnerable Cuban children, women and men through reintroducing outdated policies and prejudices. This is a matter of serious concern for the Hugo Chavez International Foundation for Peace, Friendship and Solidarity and in particular for the Che Guevara African Medical Brigade. These hostile behaviours have rather tightened the economic embargo and adversely affected the Cuban families in vulnerable situations. As pointed out by our International Staff Director (ISD), Madam Yeanoh Kamara three years ago in 2016, during the signing of the condolence book for the death of Dr. Fidel Castro- "the US government's economic embargo goes beyond an economic and political measure, therefore from a humanitarian and ethical perspective, it should be lifted immediately and unconditionally".

This is the position of the Hugo Chavez International Foundation for Peace, Friendship and Solidarity, as well as the driving force behind this solidarity message. This position is as fresh as ever, and uncompromising.

Our parent organization, i.e. the Hugo Chavez International Foundation for Peace, Friendship and Solidarity endorses the call for the United Nations to move beyond voting at the General Assembly, but to defy the US hegemony. We urge all countries and members-states of the United Nations to throw the US blockade against Cuba, to the dustbin of history where it rightfully belongs. This appeal is a reminder to all of us that the US blockade against Cuba was destined to end and that it has to end this year, so that the coming year, 2020 would be declared the year of progress in the United Nations.

The department of Che Guevara African Medical Brigade of the Hugo Chavez International Foundation for Peace, Friendship and Solidarity exists to provide education, clean and nuisance free environment, climate change and natural disasters research, medical and humanitarian aid, or other services deemed necessary for the benefit of all people in need.

As the health and medical department of the Hugo Chavez International Foundation for Peace, Friendship and Solidarity, the Che Guevara African Medical Brigade works to provide assistance to people across the globe by offering humanitarian services and environmental protection programs such as health, education, environment, water and sanitation, humanitarian and disability relief, climate change and natural disasters research and policy, assistance to victims of natural or man-made disasters, poverty alleviation, and women's and children's rights. We are dedicated to alleviating human suffering regardless of race, color, religion, or cultural background.

We take this opportunity Mr. Ambassador, to congratulate and thank you in appreciation for the hard work you have put in, despite the artificial difficulties to get the message to the target audience. Knowing the impact of the US government blockade against Cuba to both human and material damages will cause to the Cuban economy, we wish to reiterate once again our solidarity with Cuba.

Long live Cuba!

Long live the people of Cuba!!
