Chargé d'Affaires of Cuba in Liberia denounces damages of the blockade to Cuba

LIBERIA, October 23, 2017.- In the framework of the International Campaign to Support Cuba against the Blockade that takes place annually in October, the Cuban Chargé d'Affaires in Liberia, Yordenis Despaigne Vera, presented a draft resolution 71/5 entitled "Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba".
Following the welcoming words, the head of the Cuban diplomatic mission referred to the new elements that evidence the tightening of the policy of blockade against Cuba during the period April 2016-June 2017, especially in its extraterritorial character. He emphasized the complexity of the voting scenario of the Resolution, given President Donald Trump's recent statements aimed at strengthening sanctions against Cuba and going back in the process of normalization of relations between Cuba and the United States. He therefore stressed the increasingly crucial importance of international solidarity in a number of forums - in particular the multilateral spheres and within the United States itself - in order to put pressure on the Trump administration to achieve the total elimination of this politics.
During the question session, and motivated by the introductory summary, several members of the audience inquired into such topics as what actions Cuba has taken in the face of the tightening of the blockade or what alternatives persist for the process of normalization of relations, following the president's announcements American.
In the heat of the debate, it was exemplified, with concrete statistical data, multiple aspects of the impact of this unjust and ineffective policy against Cuba, as well as the undeniable achievements of the Caribbean island in sectors of social impact, despite the limitations of a siege economic development of more than 50 years.
