US hardens Blockade to Cuba with Helms-Burton, Cubans in Canada warn

Havana, May 15, 2019.- The activation of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act has hardened the economic blockade with which the United States has besieged Cuba for nearly 60, the Association of Cuban Residents in Toronto (ACRT), Canada, has denounced.

The first impact will be suffered by investors who currently have commercial relations with Cuba and those who intend to do so in the future. The objective is to intimidate, discourage and close doors to the island, the ACRT president, Julio Fonseca, stated in an e-mail interview with Prensa Latina.

The fact that someone can sue persons or entities at a US court not only from Cuba, but from any other country in the world, is an evidence of the interventionist and extraterritorial nature of this Law that violates third countries' sovereignty, Fonseca said.

The 'Juan Gualberto Gomez' Association of Cuban Residents in Toronto rejects and condemns the application of Title III of Helms-Burton Act, the organization's director stressed, insisting that this scenario is part of the most recent escalation of the current US administration.

The objective of the group, founded in 2007, is to bring together the Cuban residents in Toronto, capital of the Canadian province of Ontario.

The 12th National Meeting of Cubans Residents in Canada will be held on Saturday, May 18, and the ACRT will organize the meeting. Each year, the venues alternate among Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal, Fonseca said.
