Washington’s Blockade Affects Cuba’s Transportation Sector
Havana, Oct 28 (AIN) The lack of money for the purchase of new vehicles and spare parts is another example of the effects of Washington’s blockade against Cuba.
The director of the City of Havana’s Transportation Office, Pedro Antela, told AIN news agency that the current problem worsens the critical situation facing public transportation in Havana, a city of more than 2 million residents.
Antela added that transportation workers are doing all they can to better use the available resources, although they will have new additional vehicles in the coming months.
In addition to vehicles, spare parts will be acquired for the urban transportation network and equipment for the maintenance of vehicles, said Antela.
Over 12 million people have used what is called the "State’s Group of Alternative Transportation," which has eased the critical situation in Havana by using state cars to give rides to people who might be going their way.
This new system must be improved, says the director of the city’s Transportation Department, as some drivers of state-owned cars refuse to stop for inspectors in charge of stopping these vehicles at a certain point of the city to pick up people using the alternative transportation method.
The average transportation load in Havana is currently 540,000 thousand people per day. |
