Grand Mufti of Lebanon Condemns US Blockade of Cuba
CUBA, January 15th, 2011.- Sheik Mohamed Rachid Qabbani, Grand Mufti of Lebanon (top Sunni Islamic religious authority), condemned the economic, financial and commercial blockade of the United States against Cuba, Cuban diplomatic sources reported on Saturday in Beirut.
In his conversation with Cuba’s ambassador to that Arab nation, Manuel Serrano, the most prominent Muslim Sunni cleric reiterated his condemnation to this hostile and inhuman policy of Washington, the Prensa Latina news agency reported.
During the meeting, Serrano explained the main damages caused by the criminal siege imposed on the island for almost 50 years now, and highlighted the Cuban people’s resistance to that punitive measure.
Recent figures (December 2009) show that the blockade has cost the island some 751 billion dollars, the Cuban Foreign Ministry’s Web site reports.
Likewise, Serrano offered details on Cuba’s situation, with special emphasis on the process of popular debate on the Draft Guidelines of the Economic and Social Policy. (Cubaminrex-Cuban News Agency)
